After a year, work on South Park’s only Metro rail station is done. The South Park Business Improvement District recently wrapped a series of improvements to the Pico/Chick Hearn station at 1236 S. Flower St.
The BID added new lights, signage and fencing, as well as covers for car barriers. The goal was to make the station, which services the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Blue and Expo light-rail lines, more accessible and safer for riders.
“The majority of crimes that take place in South Park are committed on or around the station, and our 24/7 safety patrols reflect that. These improvements will encourage increased usage of the station, and those additional eyes on the street make the environment safer for all,” South Park BID Executive Director Ellen Riotto said in a prepared statement.
The work was funded through a $1.5 million grant from the MyFigueroa Project, which is overhauling the Figueroa Corridor with more features for bicyclists and pedestrians.
